Florence Price was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and spent most of her professional life in
Chicago, Illinois. She was the first Black American woman symphonist (in 1933, when her first of
four symphonies was played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Frederick Stock, conductor. She composed a large catalogue of works, including other orchestral music, piano concerto, 2 violin
concertos, choral works, songs, spiritual arrangements, chamber music, a piano sonata and other
piano works, organ music, and many piano teaching pieces. She was a pianist and organist.
